The In-Between Season: Slow Mornings, Easy Layers & Late-Summer Rituals

There's a particular kind of magic in early August — the kind where summer hasn't quite let go, but you can feel autumn waiting just around the corner. The evenings cool off a little sooner. The light turns golden a little earlier. It's a season we've come to think of as the "in-between," and honestly? It might be our favorite one.

Instead of rushing past it to get to pumpkin spice season, we're trying something different this year: slowing down and actually savoring these in-between weeks. Here's what that's looking like for us lately.

Slow Down Before You Speed Up

Late summer has a way of feeling like the last exhale before everything picks up again — school schedules, holiday planning, the whole busy back half of the year. Before that happens, we're leaning into small, unhurried rituals: a slower morning with coffee on the porch before the heat sets in, a Sunday spent reorganizing a closet instead of running errands, an evening walk timed to catch the sunset instead of squeezing it in between tasks.

None of this requires a big life overhaul. It's really just permission to let a few things be simple again, even for fifteen minutes a day.

Dress for the In-Between

Our closets are going through their own transition right now, and honestly, the trick isn't buying a whole new fall wardrobe — it's finding a few pieces that work with what's already there. A lightweight layer you can tie around your shoulders when the AC kicks on, or throw over a sundress once the sun starts to dip.

A few of our current favorites for exactly this kind of dressing: the Striped Button Down Cardigan is soft, easy, and priced right at $39.95 — the kind of piece you'll reach for constantly once the temperature starts doing its late-summer up-and-down dance. If you want something with a little more texture, the Textured Stripe Dolman Sleeve Pullover (also $39.95) has a relaxed, oversized drape that feels more "cozy Sunday" than "heavy sweater weather." And for warmer days that still call for a little coverage, the Cropped Crochet Button Front Cardigan ($49.95) is breezy enough to wear over a tank without overheating.

None of these ask you to commit to fall just yet — they just make the in-between a little more comfortable.

Little Joys Worth Making Time For

A few other things we're making space for this month: reading on the porch until it's actually too dark to see the page, saying yes to one more outdoor dinner before the patio season winds down, and giving ourselves grace to not have every weekend planned out.

There's also something to be said for changing one small thing at a time instead of everything at once — swapping a sandal for a low boot on a cooler morning, adding one layering piece to an outfit you already love, lighting a candle in the evening even though it's technically still summer. Small shifts, not a total reset.

However You're Easing In

Whether you're firmly team "squeeze every last drop out of summer" or already dreaming in flannel, we hope this season gives you a little room to breathe before the calendar fills back up. And if a few easy layering pieces make that transition feel a little softer, we're always here for that too.

What does your in-between season look like? We'd love to hear how you're easing into fall this year.
